Understanding Your Cholesterol Profile
Cholesterol travels through the blood attached to proteins, forming packages called lipoproteins. Keeping track of individual lipoproteins helps evaluate cardiovascular health:
- Total Cholesterol: The overall amount of cholesterol in your blood.
- HDL (High-Density Lipoprotein): The "good" cholesterol that carries other cholesterol away from your arteries back to the liver.
- LDL (Low-Density Lipoprotein): Often referred to as "bad" cholesterol. Excess LDL builds up plaque on arterial walls, narrowing blood flow.
- VLDL (Very-Low-Density Lipoprotein): Mainly carries triglycerides (fats) to body tissues. High levels are linked to plaque accumulation.
- Triglycerides: A type of fat stored in fat cells, which the body uses for energy between meals.
The Friedewald Formula
In clinical settings, LDL cholesterol is often estimated using the Friedewald equation rather than direct measurement:
LDL = Total Cholesterol - HDL - (Triglycerides / 5)
Here, Triglycerides / 5 serves as the estimation for VLDL cholesterol. This formula is highly accurate for normal profiles, but it becomes medically unreliable if Triglyceride levels exceed 400 mg/dL. In such cases, a direct lab measurement is necessary.
